Preparation Advice
- Conduct thorough research into the universities you are applying for and the courses you want to study. Find out what attributes they could be looking for in a potential student, and consider how you may match these. Look at the course criteria, and the modules of study for the first year and think about how you fit in to them.
- Read examples of personal statements and get a feel for their structure and their flow.
- Speak to your college tutor, or someone with experience in the subject field you are looking to study in, and ask their advice on what you should include.
- Brainstorm: Take a blank sheet of paper and write down all the relevant points you can think of that could make it into your personal statement. Think about the structure of the statement and how you think you might write the introduction.
- List three or four main points that you think you must include, and build the body of your personal statement around these.
- Give yourself plenty of time to complete your personal statement. You cannot do this in a hurry, so make sure you do not leave it until the last minute.
